This summer in the cathedral of the Spanish city of Oviedo I encountered a small stone sculpture, dating back to the 9th century and showing a man‘s head between two lions. The animals show no signs of hostility but look rather like they want to lick the man‘s face. I believe this sculpture is representing the biblical story of Daniel in the lion’s den. However my first thought was - this is what peace looks like: The actors in this scene do not just abstain from their expected behavior of aggression or fear, but rather develop new and unexpected capabilities. This may be surprising even to themselves. They transcend their status quo and that gives a new quality to the whole situation. The peaceful moment reveals a glimpse of utopia.
